P7 Mrs Gill

Bend the Rules Day was definitely a hit with our Year 7s. Thanks to the PTA for organising a terrific day for the boys and girls- a day filled with fun and smiles and treats! Happy half-term break everyone!

#smallschoolbigheart

Our Year 7 class welcomed Richard and Sharon Orr into their classroom today and found out lots of interesting things about farming and food production. They now have a greater appreciation of the hard work and effort that goes into the journey of a food from a seed to the point when it reaches the shop shelves.

The boys and girls are feeling inspired to have a go at “growing their own” and will perhaps have a go at making their own food after half term so watch this space! They were also delighted to take home a bag of freshly dug AM Farming potatoes. A massive thank you to the Orrs for coming in today-we really appreciate it!

In the Life of Farmers Workshop at Castlewellan

Today our Year 7s enjoyed a morning at Castlewellan Forest Park where they learnt about the lives of tenant farmers in the late 19th Century and the class system in County Down. They prepared some flax to make linen and had lots of fun role-playing a hiring fair to try to gain employment! On World Mental Health Day it was great for the pupils to have the opportunity to spend the morning in the beautiful surroundings of Castlewellan Forest and have time to notice the wonders of nature!

Thanks to Ben for leading a fantastic workshop and to Kelly for helping with transport.

🍁 An Awesomely Autumnal Afternoon 🍁

Our Year 7 children had a busy afternoon out in the fresh air brushing leaves and tidying our school grounds and getting the paintbrushes out to create a wonderful work of art which will be revealed to all the lovely folk of Crossgar very soon! The boys and girls talked to each other, encouraged each other, helped each other out and laughed with each other as they worked together to achieve an end goal! Great team work Year 7!

The long and the short of it is.....Year 7 did a fantastic job with their practical measuring work today! They worked hard to be precise and discussed various jobs which might involve needing to measure lengths carefully.

#smallschoolbigheart

Our Year 7s have been busy with their topic work lately.

Their topic this term is ”Farming”. In Art, the children have been sketching rural landscapes and using watercolours to create tone and texture in their wonderful paintings. To put their Maths skills to good use, they’ve been using scale to design a farmyard for Farmer Brown with enough space for all his animals! It was also time to harvest some more tasty tomatoes from our tomato plants.

Spaces To Be Begins for Year 6/7

Today we were delighted to welcome Danielle and Jess from Playboard NI to kickstart the Spaces to Be sessions. The boys and girls thought about themselves and their emotions before having time to play! They loved having the freedom to choose, the freedom to be, the freedom to explore and the freedom to PLAY with one another.

World Book Day 2025

It was all about book characters and book genres in Year 6/7 today as we enjoyed a day in our comfies to #ReadYourWay. The boys and girls thought about which book character they’d like to be for a day, searched for book genres in our school library before conducting a survey to find out which genre is most popular in Glasswater. All this, combined with some time to read and a special World Book Day assembly with Mrs Wilson, made for a memorable World Book Day!

A Victorian Schoolday

The Year 6s and 7s travelled back to the 1800s to get a taste of what life was like for schoolchildren in Victorian times. They embraced it all....from dressing up, to completing the 3 ‘R’s, enjoying some traditional playground games, sewing for girls, technical drawing for boys, some even tried some workhouse gruel at snack time! A great day was had....but something tells me they’ll all be happy to return to 2025-style learning in the morning!

Today some of our Year 7 pupils took part in a cross country race at Kilbroney Forest Park. They encouraged and cheered one another on as completed the course. Well done - we are proud of each one of you!

#smallschoolbigheart

Richard and Sharon from Bellshill Farmshop and Tearoom kindly came in to visit our Year 7s this afternoon. The pupils listened intently and asked lots of questions as Richard told them all about his farm, how he uses technology, about the crops he grows and what goes into some of the foods we eat and enjoy.

The Year 7s learnt lots about farming and food production and throughly enjoyed their afternoon with Richard and Sharon. Thanks to them both for coming along (and for the delicious traybakes which went down a treat!)

Farming in the Past

Today our Year 7s had a fantastic morning at Castlewellan Forest Park where they learnt lots about farming in bygone years. They tried their hand at some of the stages of linen-making from flax and role-played a hiring market (where most of them were successful at getting a job for some rather hard-to-please employers).

#smallschoolbigheart

The Year 7s have been busy this week designing a farmyard for Farmer Brown. They used their Numeracy skills to draw a plan to scale and showed great communication and cooperation as they worked with a partner to do so. Brilliant job boys and girls!

#smallschoolbigheart

Our Year 7s have been enjoying settling back into school as they embark on their final year at Glasswater!
