P7 Mrs Gill

Welcome to P7!

Earth Day Litter Pick

Today we gathered some litter from the streets and green spaces in Crossgar to help to make our village a little tidier and safer for our animals and wildlife. The boys and girls were surprised by how many bags they filled!

Around the World with Year 7

Today the Year 7s presented their projects to their teacher and classmates, telling us all about the country they had chosen to research. They spoke with confidence and kept their audience engaged throughout. We all learnt something new from each other…..including Mrs Gill! Well done everyone!

Year 7 were delighted to welcome the most gorgeous, fluffiest little chicks into their room to help them with their spelling activities this morning. Thanks to Sarah and Ruby for bringing them in!

Getting creative with the Year 7s

Inspired by Victorian artist, William Morris, the pupils in Year 7 have been busy painting nature-inspired watercolours and experimenting with block printing. They’ve created some gorgeous artwork!

Happy World Book Day from the Year 7s!

The boys and girls enjoyed a day in their ‘comfies’, some tasty treats and time in the library surrounded by books as they explored different book genres to mark World Book Day 2024.

The Year 7s enjoyed learning about electricity and circuits this afternoon. After discovering that light bulbs were invented in Victorian times, they investigated what they needed to do to make one light up!

A Victorian Schoolday for Year 7

Today the Year 7s travelled back in time to 1893. They experienced some of what a Victorian school child would have done…the 3 Rs, very strict rules (and teacher), PE drills, playground games and some even tasted some workhouse gruel! The general consensus was that school is 2024 is much better!

Our Year 7s have enjoyed a morning out at a taster day at The High School Ballynahinch.

Thanks to all the staff and pupils for giving us such a warm welcome and allowing our pupils to try some of the subjects they will be doing in their next schools. They all loved it!

Year 7 Christmas Party

Today the Year 7s enjoyed their Christmas party day. They recently planned and worked within a budget to order the food and today all worked together brilliantly to prepare their party feast. They even made their own crackers to pull!

Christmas music and party games featured before they ended the day with a Christmas movie.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

On Friday the Year 7s were feeling festive as they completed the Santa Daily Mile around the village. They spent the day learning about how the Victorians celebrated Christmas and enjoyed creating a garland of kindness, icing biscuits and making thaumatrope toys. They all worked together brilliantly to decorate the classroom as well!

Year 7 Make a Noise for Anti-Bullying Week

Today the Year 7s took part in a HIP Psychology online workshop which reminded them of lots of important anti-bullying messages. Then they worked with a partner to create a superhero whose mission is to combat bullying…the boys and girls had super ideas and then had the opportunity to introduce their superhero to the rest of the class!

It’s been a busy week in Year 7.

For Maths Week Ireland they used their Maths Eyes and thought about how they use our Maths skills in everyday life....even when they don’t realise they’re doing so! For Book Week they enjoyed a ‘Book Talk’ session in the school library, sharing their thoughts about a book they’ve recently read with their classmates.

And to top it all off, they loved being able to take a pumpkin, from the PTA’s wonderful pumpkin patch, home to carve for next week. Thanks to all involved in transforming our hall into an autumnal array of pumpkins for our pupils.

Year 7 Cross Country Event

Some of our Year 7s enjoyed a morning out at Dunleath Playing Fields in Downpatrick at the Year 7 Cross Country Event organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
Many thanks to all involved in organising this event and to the parents who came to cheer on the runners!

Year 7 had a great morning out at Castlewellan Forest Park as they learnt about ’Farming in the Past’ and role-played a ‘Hiring Market.’ Many of the boys and girls were delighted to be hired as labourers, mechanics or scullery maids, but unfortunately no-one had any job openings for Mrs Gill!

Thanks to Amy and Newry and Mourne District Council for an informative and enjoyable morning.

Year 7 have been busy making good use of their wheat this week. First they separated the wheat from the chaff, then they ground the wheat in a mill and finally they sieved it! They now have some wholewheat flour and wheatgerm to use. I wonder what they will make.....

Thanks to Richard and Sharon from Meadow Farm Potatoes for kindly lending us the equipment to allow the pupils to have this fabulous learning experience!

Harvesting Wheat While the Sun Shines

Last year’s Year 7 pupils planted some wheat seeds given to them by Richard Orr from Meadow Farm Potatoes when he came into Glasswater to talk to them about farming. This week our current Year 7 pupils were able to harvest the wheat as the sun shone. Now they’re thinking about how they could use their harvested crop!
